That moment when you finish a book, look around, and realize that everyone is just carrying on with their lives as though you didn’t just experience emotional trauma at the hands of a paperback.
So I just finished a book in which one character reminded me of a friend of mine. And at the end, that character almost jumped off a bridge in an attempt at suicide, but decided not to. So I got scared and texted my friend the following:
Hey, are you okay? This is gonna sound sort of weird and irrational but I just finished reading this book and there was a boy in it who kind of reminded me of you and he tried to kill himself. And it really freaked me out. So I felt an impulse to make sure you were okay and not suicidal, and I’m like actually really worried for some reason so please answer me quickly :[
He texted back a minute or two later with a simple: Ya I’m fine hun don’t worry
As though the fact that I texted him in a panic thinking he was about to commit suicide, for no apparent reason, is a normal everyday thing. Like he’s used to me doing this. Which kind of made me laugh.
I think he should be more worried about ME.
